In June 2010, North York General lost one of its great leaders and champions, Gordon F. Cheesbrough. Mr. Cheesbrough had just completed a five-year term as Chair of the Hospital’s Board of Governors when he passed away after a sudden onset of aggressive lymphoma.
To honour his legacy, Mr. Cheesbrough’s friends and family came together with remarkable passion to organize the Cheesbrough Invitational Charity Golf Tournament. The inaugural event, held on September 30, 2010, raised $225,000 to help establish a research fund to support the Gordon F. Cheesbrough Chair in Family and Community Medicine, the first chair of its kind in Canada.
The establishment of the Chair will help the Hospital recruit an outstanding senior academic in the field of Family and Community Medicine, one of North York General Hospital’s most well-respected areas of healthcare. The position is also a major step forward in our expanding academic mission, a priority for the Hospital’s strategic plan for 2012-2015.
Mr. Cheesbrough was first appointed to North York General Hospital’s Board of Governors in June 2000. He was elected Treasurer in June 2001 and served in that capacity until his appointment as Chair in 2005. In early 2010, he joined the Board of Governors for the Foundation. In these roles he provided incredible vision and leadership to our hospital, in service to our community, and led North York General Hospital to many great successes.
You can make a tribute donation to NYGH to honour Gordon Cheesbrough. The Cheesbrough family will be notified of all gifts made in memory of Gordon.
