Thanks to overwhelming support from our community, the 7th Annual OrthoWalk was a huge success! This past Sunday, June 7th, was an exciting day at North York General, when more than 150 members of our community came out to support leading-edge orthopaedic care at North York General Hospital, including the sun! With good company, fun activities, and a barbecue lunch, everyone was in great spirits, for a great cause.
OrthoWalk is a symbolic 1km walk around the hospital’s beautiful patio garden and gives participants an opportunity to thank and honour their surgeons, nurses, physiotherapists, and all the staff at North York General who provide exceptional orthopaedic care. The event featured a delicious breakfast sponsored by Panera Bread, a barbecue lunch, live music by “Plan B”, face painting, an ice cream truck, balloon animals, and a special visit from the Toronto Police Service Mounted Unit and St. John’s Ambulance therapy dogs.
For the past 44 years, the orthopaedic department at North York General has become a well-respected area of care within the hospital, our community and throughout the city of Toronto. Launched in 1971, with just four orthopaedic surgeons, the department has now more than doubled and become one of the busiest orthopaedic centres in Canada. With more than 28,000 patient visits annually, the orthopaedic centre in our hospital is the second busiest area, after the emergency department. It is important that we support this area of care, as more than 90% of Canadians are expected to require orthopaedic care in their lifetime.
We are excited to announce that this year’s OrthoWalk raised nearly $72,000 in support of leading-edge orthopaedic care today, and research and education for tomorrow. Thank you to our lead sponsor, Zimmer and all our generous sponsors and donors. OrthoWalk would not have been such a success without you.
A very special thank you to our tremendous OrthoWalk Co-Chairs: Dr. Ted Rumble, Dr. Maurice Bent, Dr. Shawn Garbedian, and Dr. Hossein Mehdian for their dedication and commitment to ensuring that OrthoWalk continues to be a success each year to better support our patients and their families. Thank you again for your participation in this year’s OrthoWalk. Together, we can make a world of difference for the patients and families we serve at North York General.
