The transformation of health care

Establishing one research chair in a community hospital would be significant in itself. But five? That’s unheard of at any other community hospital in Canada. Investing in research and innovation shows NYGH’s commitment to helping sustain our health care system and to moving beyond the status quo by conducting innovative research that will transform the way we deliver care.

NYGH has always had a culture of asking questions, solving problems and developing new approaches; in short, innovation. This attitude of rolling up our sleeves and making changes to do what is best for our patients has already transformed our patients’ experiences. NYGH put the process in place that created emergency wait times that are amongst the best in Toronto. The systems developed in our Cancer Care Program improved efficiency and led to Cancer Care Ontario recognizing NYGH for the shortest surgical wait times (time from decision to treat, to treatment) for a remarkable three years in a row. NYGH has always had the vision of transforming health care. The Institute for Health Care Innovation is helping to formalize these efforts in an academic, research-driven environment.  One of the first major achievements of the Institute took place in 2010, with the creation of the Gordon F. Cheesbrough Research Chair in Family and Community Medicine, the first of its kind in Canada. Since then, two additional research chairs have been appointed to top scientists in their fields, propelling NYGH’s ambitious research and innovation strategy forward. NYGH is currently recruiting for two additional scientists, to fill a total of five research chairs. Scholars, researchers, physicians and clinician scientists from around the world are seizing the opportunity to join NYGH’s growing research and innovation team.

“It’s really very exciting to be able to hire these world class researchers,” says Dr. Donna McRitchie, VP Research. “The practical work that they are doing today will have outcomes that benefit our patients, our community and the entire health care system.”

The Institute for Health Care Innovation is fully funded by the philanthropic support of donors who embrace our vision for the future: the Gordon F. Cheesbrough Research Chair in Family and Community Medicine was established by an anonymous donor and augmented by gifts from family and friends of Gordon Cheesbrough, the late Chair of North York General Hospital’s Board of Governors; an amalgamation of donor support funded NYGH’s Knowledge Translation and Implementation Research Chair; and Brad and Kathy Badeau’s visionary gift established the Badeau Family Research Chair in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement.

Philanthropic gifts have the power to transform health care. With $9.3M left to raise in our $23M commitment to Research and Innovation at NYGH, and are looking for even more visionary donors to help us reach our goal and inspire positive change throughout our entire health care system.

Contact NYGH Foundation to find out how your gift will help. At NYGH, Going Beyond Care is what we do – but we can’t do it without you.
